Frat War Trend: From Rumble to Bombing!

I've read an article by PinoyApache and it goes like this. "Being associated with a fraternity or sorority was considered vogue and brings with it prestige, popularity, pride and a sense of belongingness. During those times, the fraternity and sorority organization only recruited those whom they feel would become a good asset to their organization.

So it is common for them to get only the best student and the brightest scholar, the most popular coed or the strongest athlete and the richest guy or the most influential brat. Fraternities and sororities are known to support each other in their scholastic pursuits and even beyond it like landing a job position or being promoted to choice seats of authority."

But. look at what's happening now. Fratmen should know this. Rumble in 1990s, Gun-shooting in 2000s and now 2010, bombing? What's next?

"The strong shall live, the weak shall die...", one fratman said. He seemed to sound like Shishiyo and his equally-evil sidekick, Houji. These fictional characters during the Meiji Era of Japan are what we call the disease.

In my opinion, frats here are a sad caricature of frats in the U.S. But even there they don't have a very good reputation. Difference is when someone dies due to hazing (most of the time due to alcohol poisoning, rather than getting beaten up) there's immediate action by the police, the school and their government. The opposite happens here, you even have a Vice President coming to the defense of a murder suspect, and his only basis is that he looked into his eyes and was convinced of his innocence. What a joke our country is with people like this. Until we become mature enough as a people to have fraternities they should simply be banned. I guarantee you nobody will miss them save for the power hungry leaders of these gangs. There are many countries in the world that don't have fraternities and they are doing just fine. By the way, Harvard, one of the best schools in the world, doesn't have fraternities. In their view, students should feel a fraternity with their fellow students, so Harvard students help other Harvard students. Fraternities just split campuses, so their loyalty is no longer to their fellow schoolmates but to their fraternities many of whom don't even go to the same school. 

The best thing fraternities can do is make changes to their respective systems. Why are non-college students being recruited? Why are officers not paying any attention to academic merit? Why must hazing involve physical harm? The fraternity I joined hazed neophytes -- and frankly I see nothing wrong with it granted that it doesn't really hurt anyone -- but it was a fun (not to mention dumb really) experience. Yes pledges were humiliated and "challenged" mentally, but we never beat a person within an inch to his life.

The very fact that violent incidents take place is a clear indication that something is wrong with the members or structure of some fraternities in the PI.

Hazing Victim's Body Found Inside A Drum

MANILA, Philippines – Scavengers sifting through a pile of garbage Wednesday found the body of a 17-year-old Grade 6 student floating in the waters of Manila bay where supposed members of the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity threw him after he succumbed to injuries during the fraternity’s initiation rites.

Police authorities had a difficult time taking the body of Noel Borja, Jr., out of a plastic push cart where he was placed after he was cemented and sealed in a container.

Police theorized that Borja of No. 207, Area Bm Gate 50, Parola compound, Binondo, Manila had been sealed for three days before he was found.

The victim’s friend who survived the hazing said they were recruited by the Tau Gamma Phi fraternity members last Sunday, October 24. A certain “RC” reportedly led the initiation rites inside the undisclosed residence of a certain “Neil.”

“Ginamitan ho kami ng paddle at pinatakan ng kandila ang aming katawan” Joshoua told reporters, showing his leg injuries.

Joshua said after the hazing the victim suddenly lost his consciousness. “Sinubukan nilang i-revive at i-pump ang dibdib nito subalit walang nagyari,” the neophyte added.

Joshua even disclosed that he saw the fraternity members tied the victim as others took cement and sand and started mixing it.

The witness added that he also fell asleep due to exhaustion and extreme pain. When he woke up the victim was nowhere to be found.

As for me, why does there have to be hazing when fraternities started? I thought fraternities were about brotherhood. What does your tolerance to pain have something to do about brotherhood? What does it have to do so you can help your brothers? So fraternity members can go to war with fit bodies? Then fraternities are not about brotherhood but just unnecessary violence.

If fraternities really want to test your brotherhood, then frat leaders should test their PERSONALITY. Even though how tough and how six-packed you are, it has NOTHING to do with helping your brothers.

The fact that hazing was there at start makes me think that fraternities are just plain stupid. No offense to the mature members.

4. You're The Exact Opposite Of the Ex
           If he keeps bringing this up, be careful - you have found a guy on the rebound who is trying to rebel.

5. You're Exactly The Same as the Ex
           If you encounter a guy who was deeply in love with a girl and then fell into a net of break-up and is on the rebound, be careful.

Yesterday's episode of Survivor Philippines Celebrity Edition was interesting and intriguing. It was a reward challenge. The challenge, "Don't Lie To Me" was all about telling the truth to questions of Manay Lolit Solis. Actually, this was a confirmation from them if what they answered to the lie detector test (taken a week before day 1) were really true. And in this challenge, those who made a mistake, his/her pillows and blanket fell to a mud pit.

And the reward? An overnight stay at Ko Payam Beach Resort in Thailand where delicious foods, soft and clean beds, airconditioned  rooms, and picnic by the beach waited for them. It was worth playing for these castaway-celebrities!


The first one to made a mistake and was disqualified for the next round was Elma, then she was followed by Aubrey, Ahron, Moi, Michelle, Aki and finally Ervic.

And the rewards challenge winners were Solenn and Aira.  They were allowed to take one castaway with them to Ko Payam. So, Solenn chose Elma while Aira chose Moi. The four of them had wondrous moments at the resort!

Which is the best ECE review center?

ECE graduates are preparing for their licensure exams this November 7, 2010. Only one week is left for them to review all their notes, books, and all other review materials. Almost all of them right now are pressured for this exam. The question now, which review center has the most effective review materials and reviewers? Here in Cebu, only 3 ECE review centers dominate. Excel Review Center, PERC DC and RF (just established recently). I asked reviewees from these 3 centers and from what they said, here are my opinions.

1. One advantage of PERC is that they treat you more as a fresh ECE student giving you more lectures and attention on basics and foundations of ECE.
2. Both Excel and PERC are good but many prefer to enrol in PERC because of cheaper fee and the training is good.
3. Excel has always nice and very good feedbacks but the review fees are higher.
4. The reason Excel almost always get first place and sometimes sweep top 10 is that they are recruiting honor students which I think is excellent market strategy.
5. Founders of PERC and RF came from Excel. Since RF is newly established, nobody can prove its performance yet. Let's just wait.
6. Excel provides very good review materials for GEAS and Math especially during coaching while for Electronics, PERC's reviewers are very good.
7. Among all the review centers, only Excel has the license to operate from CHED.

This video caught my attention. The native boy sang Bubbly (Colbie Calliat's song) in exchange for a few coins in Subic, Zambales, Philippines. Who could ever resist his RnB-like voice? I wonder who this boy really is? I knew that he is Arjohn Gilbert. But is he really an Aeta? or Fil-Am abandoned by his black American army father? And now, he's making money on his own.

Mara Clara: Revived??

Do you still remember Emil Cruz Jr.'s Mara Clara? When I was a kid, we used to watch this TV series. It is actually the longest-playing telenovela of ABS-CBN. This ran from June 22, 1992 to February 14, 1997. Who could ever forget the relentless sufferings of all the protagonists and the annoying face of the villain here? Hahaha. This series definitely became a part of our daily lives at that time. My mom never missed an episode. 


And now,this year 2010, ABS-CBN is preparing for the remake of this famous teleserye but with a new twist. The new generation's stars Kathryn Bernardo as Mara and Julia Montes as Clara are set to follow the footsteps of the original Mara and Clara, Judy Ann Santos, Queen of Soap Opera and Gladys Reyes, one of the most famous Kontrabida on Philippine TV as they pour out intense acting on the highly-anticipated teleserye.

Annabelle Rama on war against Heart Evangelista

Annabelle Rama (talent manager) is in rage now over Heart Evangelista when the latter refused to renew her management contract with Rama. She announced this during a press conference. Due to her anger, she let loose inflammatory words against Heart and curse her for being an ingrate. She said that she is so disappointed after what she did to uplift Heart's career, the latter then dumps her.

On the other hand, Heart Evangelista said that she wanted her mom to manage her career now. On her twitter, she said, "Contracts are made to end and not renewing is something the other party isn't happy about. My family has always managed my career and there's nothing wrong with that. I will always be grateful to everyone that helped along the way. No need for bad words! :) have a kitkat :) "

This award was announced during simple rites at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati City last Tuesday, October 19.

Despite the awards she had received both here in the Philippines and abroad, she jokingly confessed that what is lacking in her life now is a man she will marry.

Jon Made A Mistake, Was Voted Out

Today's episode of Survivor Philippines Celebrity Edition was so so sad for Michelle and Jon. Jon obviously made a mistake. He tried to save his girlfriend from the other castaways, who wanted her out, by giving her his immunity bracelet. But he didn't know that it was him who is really the target. Michelle was disappointed of Jon for what he did because she was saying earlier that she's ready to go home. Tsk tsk. Jon's love for Michelle was his downfall. For me, that was so sweet of Jon. Well, for Michelle, I hope she will be fine now that Jon is voted out. I hope she will make her sadness into a strength to go on. And to Jon, I salute you for loving and showing her how much you love her. It was touching... Congratulations to you and Michelle and hope that you two will still stay with each other for many more years.

Survivor Phil. Celeb Ed: Aki Won Immunity Necklace!

Yesterday's episode of Survivor Philippines Celebrity Edition was so thrilling. It was their first immunity challenge as one tribe. No more Nagar. No more Sar Mayee. All of them fused in one tribe, Galone. All of them now are competing against each other. Akihiro Sato (international model) won that first immunity challenge. He was named as the "Human Canine" because he easily found all the sandbags hidden under the sand. And now, he has the immunity necklace.
Jon and Michelle, after that challenge, were really disappointed because they knew that one of them will go home the next night. They bade each other goodbye already. Jon wanted to give her his immunity bracelet but he is still undecided. Michelle, on the other one hand, was preparing herself to go home. Oh,that was sad...

The question now: Who will really go home tonight? Jon or Michelle?

Do you know? That Kris' first kissing scene after several years took "15" hours to shoot? When I first knew about this, I thought this is funny. This is for the horror movie "Dalaw". Imagine shooting it for 15 hours for a kiss which would only last a minute or two? This 39-year old popular actress and the youngest sister of President Noynoy said it was her first time doing a kissing scene? Really? She also said that it is easier for an actress to fulfill her job if she is not in a relationship. And now that she is not anymore attached anybody, she explained that there’s no more reason to worry about.

Upcoming Barangay and SK elections...

The 2010 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections are now being prepared by the candidates who wish to serve their barangays. COMELEC said manual voting will be used. There were rumors that this election will be postponed but this week, I observed that those rumors are gone. Therefore, elections will push through this coming October 25, 2010 and has been declared as a non-working holiday under Proclamation No. 48 signed last October 6 by Executive Secretary Paquito “Jojo” Ochoa Jr.

Moreover, a nationwide gunban took effect on September 25 and will last until November 10, or 15 days after the synchronized barangay and SK elections to avoid another murder or ambush of rival parties to happen.

Last Monday, Fastfood giant Jollibee Foods Corp. said it is buying 70 percent of Mang Inasal Philippines Inc. — a Filipino food chain — for P3 billion. But still Mang Inasal owner Edgar Injap Sia III of Injap Investments Inc.will keep 30 percent equity in Mang Inasal. Jollibee said, the purchase of Mang Inasal will add 5 percent to the fastfood giant’s worldwide system sales and 7 percent to its profits. It will also increase by 16 percent Jollibee Foods' worldwide store network.

Moreover, Jollibee Foods, founded by businessman Tony Tan Caktiong, has 1,578 stores in the country and 375 abroad. Locally, the Jollibee brand has 703 stores, Chowking (404), Greenwich (218), Red Ribbon (215), Delifrance (23), and Manong Pepe’s (15).

1-2 MORE TYPHOONS EXPECTED TO COME..

Super Typhoon Juan is the 10th typhoon that entered Philippines within the year 2010. Earlier, PAG-ASA Mactan informed Cebu that Cebuanos should expect one to two typhoons more especially in November and December. This warning should apply also to the rest of the country. Residents in coastal areas were also warned of possible storm surges.

ST Juan - It's Still Here in Cebu!

National News said ST Juan is leaving today. But here in Cebu, ST Juan is still showing its strength. Strong winds still continues with heavy rains. Cebu City Disaster Coordinating Council (CCDCC) received reports on landslides and soil movements in the barangays. Erosion was reported in Sitio Kaparay in Barangay Kalunasan and Purok 3 Barangay Kamputhaw, while flash floods occurred in Sta. Terisita, Barangay Tisa.

Oscar Tabada, Mactan chief of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), said Cebu will have clearer weather tomorrow. 

He also said Juan produced rainclouds in Central Visayas even though the brunt of its landfall was in Luzon.

“You noticed the rain will suddenly appear and then it stops after a short while? That’s how Juan is affecting the other parts of the country,” Tabada said.

Leak - Moi, Survivor Philippines Celeb Edition winner?

Is this really true???

According to PinoyGossip Boy, Moi is the winner of Survivor Philippines Celeb Edition. Moi Marcampo, also known as Moi Bien, is the personal assistant of Piolo Pascual. I saw her first in the movie Kimi Dora, in which Piolo was one of the producers. She was also seen in a detergent powder commercial.

This is just a rumor. I don't know if this is really true. They said this could not be true since the winner will be decided based on a live voting. While others said, live voting will be scripted and Moi will still be the winner.

Well, if this is really true, then why will we watch Survivor?

Heart - "Masarap sa Japan"

New showbiz couple, Heart Evangelista and Daniel Matsunaga, had already arrived here in the Philippines from their three-day vacation in Japan.

In an interview with Sweet Lapus yesterday on Showbiz Central, Heart said, "Three days lang, pero sobrang refreshing," and "Nagpunta kami sa Universal Studios, kasama namin ang mga kaibigan namin. Parang normal lang ang buhay namin. Naglalakad lang kami."

Super Typhoon "Juan" is the third storm with Signal #4 that ever hit the Philippines. Storm signal No. 4 is raised when winds exceed 200 kph. The last time PAGASA raised a signal No. 4 alert was in 1995 and in 2006 during typhoon Reming and La Nina, respectivly, which killed more than 700 people and damaged property worth over P5 billion. That's why the government is strictly monitoring the updates on this typhoon via the weather forecast of PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) hourly. They do not want that tragedy brought by "Ondoy" last year. All government units have been preparing for this since last year.
